All The Rage About The L Word

So upon hearing that Showtime is planning to make reality spin-off of The L Word, I decided to conduct a Google search to get some additional scoop. This proved largely unsuccessful, as the vast majority of my results were angry blog posts about how The L Word is not an accurate portrayal of the lives of lesbians.

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding this issue.

I think it's utterly ridiculous for people to complain about The L Word not being a legitimate depiction of the lives of gay women. It's a TELEVISION SHOW. It's FICTIONAL. Its primary purpose is to entertain, NOT to inform. Honestly, what person with half a brain regards a Showtime series as a legitimate source for information? Would you cite The Tudors in an essay about Henry VIII? Does anyone really think that the drug dealing industry is like a day in the life of Nancy Botwin? Probably not -- HOPEFULLY not. For the most part, I think we watch these shows because they're sexy, funny, dramatic, etc. Call me a hardadd, but I think that if you're foolish enough to elevate them to the status of "reality" (though I'd also be inclined to argue that lot of "reality tv shows" really stretch what might rightfully be referred to as "reality") or documentary then you deserve to be misled.

Does anyone agree, disagree? If you have a counter-argument I'd love to hear it. Really. Am I just completely missing something?

Showtime planning 'Real L Word' series

Showtime has announced plans to air "The Real L Word: Los Angeles," a new reality series about real-life Los Angeles lesbians.

"The nine-episode, one-hour reality series comes from the preeminent chronicler of lesbian stories, Ilene Chaiken, who served as creator and executive producer of the long-running Showtime drama series, 'The L Word,' and will executive produce the new series," the U.S. cable television network said in a release Friday.

The new show is slated to premiere on Showtime in 2010.

"'The L Word' is a powerful franchise for us and we became very excited when creator Ilene Chaiken came up with the idea of doing a reality version of this iconic show," Showtime Networks President of Entertainment Robert Greenblatt said in a statement. "Not only are we thrilled to be working with her again, we're also very pleased to get into business with venerable reality producers like Magical Elves as we expand into a form of programming that is new for us. Unlike the plethora of reality shows out there that simply follow people around, we promise that 'The Real L Word: Los Angeles' -- like the fictional version -- could only be found on premium cable."

"The L Word" ended its six-season run on Showtime last March.

L Word Goes Reality

The “reel” dramaz, that is. After wrapping a sixth season of hit Showtime series The L Word, the network has opted to proceed with casting The Real L Word: Los Angeles, a new effort to chronicle the daily lives of six Los Angeles-based lesbians.

“Even though we concluded our sixth season of The L Word on Showtime this past March, I believe we are not nearly finished telling our L Word stories,” series creator Ilene Chaiken says in a Variety article. The story describes it as “a lesbian answer to Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise.”

For her money part, The Real L Word co-producer Jane Lipsitz promises the show will touch on an area that “has yet to be explored in reality television.”
